I initiated a new project a couple days ago called Songs for Friends. What I want to do is write a short piece (1:00 to 2:00 minutes) for each of my good friends, mostly partners in crime from TOP FLR. I cannot recall what spurred this idea, however I’m rolling with it.
I can see this being a good opportunity to challenge my compositional abilities, and to exercise a new experimental approach to the way I express myself. I have very specific feelings about each person I know, but these feelings don’t always translate to a language that we have in common. So I want to practice a form of expression on a medium we all know while incorporating this empathic sense. By writing music for others–music that is not simply dedicated, but tailored to fit their distinct personalities–I may discover a new and excellent method for appropriately drawing on inspiration and channeling it into the desired form.
The survey looks something like this:

I will be posting the results as they occur. But first I have to finish Endeavor and Ever (getting close).

1. Yes.
2. Yes, except I wouldn’t let you date my sister even if I had one :p
3. I tend to like heavily layered songs. I’m especially attracted to songs with opposing sounds. Like Grizzly Bear or Andrew Bird, but I also can appreciate a lot of electro. I like the insertion of a soft piano immensely juxtaposed with a heavy drum beat.
4. Andrew Bird, Grizzly Bear, The American Analog Set, Friendly Fires, Radiohead
5. Being far too honest, I lack tact.
6. Being honest, period.
7. None, you’re a robot.
8. I want technology to become so advanced it shows us how important humanity already is. I just saw Terminator, okay, I’m in a mood.
9. Hmm. My best friend is honest, emotionally intelligent, interesting, brash, silly, lighthearted, resilient, oblivious, sarcastic and has great style.
10. I told you so.
11. Stussy aztec patterned shorts with a vintage t shirt with a dinosaur on it that says “I’m not extinct, i’m shy!”. So cute, from the 70′s.
